The new bridge over the Nile River at Jinja is finally commencing with the signed agreement between Uganda and Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company to start construction in next year. This bridge was estimated to originally cost about 130 million US dollars.
The new bridge will be dual lane highway crossing, unlike the current one where oncoming traffic has made a speed limit of 20 KM/hr necessary. The current bridge across the Owens Falls dam will undergo repairs and added maintenance to make sure that it remains safe and sound until the new bridge opens in 2017. After this the old bridge will only be used as a backup.
The current bridge over the Owen Falls dam is the only direct link between the border with Kenya and the capital City Kampala. This is used to bring in most of the goods into Uganda from Kenya.
