Bwindi Gorilla Dies

It’s with a heavy heart that we present this news for one on the endangered mountain gorillas has died. Mwirima passed away today morning at the Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Area clinic where he was being treated for a mouth wound that made it impossible for him to eat. He has been under treatment for two weeks.

Mwirima was the silverback of the Rushegura Group, who succed Mishaya(died on Feb 2014). He died at 35 and left 14 family members under the new alpha male Kabukojo.
UWA’s executive director Dr. Andrew Seguya said Mwirima, aged about 35 years, was still young given that gorillas can survive up to 70 years. He also said the life expectancy for gorillas is 50 years.
Bwindi National park is home to more than half of the world mountain gorilla population. The other are located in Mgahinga gorilla national park, Volcanoes national park and Virunga national park
